Question: Where does the idea of boundaries come from?

Where do boundaries come from?

The ability to know our boundaries generally comes from a healthy sense of self-worth, or valuing yourself in a way that is not contingent on other people or the feelings they have toward you.

What influences our boundaries?

The boundaries a person sets may be largely influenced by their upbringing, culture, and other factors. For example, people whose parents did not set healthy boundaries may have difficulty setting healthy boundaries for themselves because they never learned how to do so.

Why do humans create boundaries?

Personal boundaries help to define an individual by outlining likes and dislikes and setting the distances one allows others to approach. Boundaries are essential to healthy relationships and, really, a healthy life. Setting and sustaining boundaries is a skill.

Where do poor boundaries come from?

People with poor boundaries typically come in two flavors: those who take too much responsibility for the emotions/actions of others and those who expect others to take too much responsibility for their own emotions/actions. Interestingly, these two types of people often end up in relationships together.
