The letters were no indicator of pattern revision, simply a means of identification among a particular set of patterns in use. For example, a size #6 Griswold skillet has a pattern number of 699 while a #7 is pattern 701 and a #8 is pattern 704.
Do eggs stick to cast-iron?
Cast iron pans arent super smooth, instead they have a lot of tiny crevices and roughness on the surface. Little bits of an egg can sit in these pores, its a physical process. It probably wont sink in very deep, but its enough to prevent your egg from sliding over the surface smoothly.

Is Griswold better than lodge?
The metal in the Griswold is thinner, but seems to hold the heat just as well. But the real beauty of the Griswold is that the cooking surface is machined much smoother than is the surface of either my Wagner or Lodge pans. It is therefore more stick resistant and easier to clean. It also heats up faster.
