Question: How do knock off rims work?

Knock-off wheels are designed to tighten as they rotate. The driver-side wheel rotates counter clockwise as the car is driven. The knock-off spinner is righthand threaded so it tightens as the car rolls forward. The knock-off spinner is lefthand threaded so it tightens as the car rolls forward.

Which way do knock offs go on?

Most knockoffs are marked right or left on the inside or outside. Most of the knockoffs out there will also have arrows on which way to hammer them on. Its good to have an extra lead hammer or two on hand as the average lifespan of a lead hammer is usually only a few installs of the wheel.

The only illegal ones are the ones that have the split in the drop center area of the rim. These can not be visually inspected to verify they are correctly seated. The rims with the locking rings out at the edge that can be visualy checked for proper seating are still in use.

Although the vast majority of todays school buses are specd for Budd-style disc wheels, some fleets still prefer the Dayton-style spoke wheel. And, yes, chassis are still being manufactured with the cast spoke wheel. They continue to come down the line at some of the countrys largest school bus manufacturers.
